Kim Yo-Jong, the younger sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un, has reportedly married Choe Song, the son of Vice Marshall Choe Ryong-Hae. The Vice Marshall “is widely viewed as Kim’s number two,” noted wire service AFP.
Little is known about the inner workings of North Korea’s first family. The wedding was discovered through a series of photographs published in Rodong Sinmun, a state-controlled newspaper, depicting Yo-Jong wearing a wedding ring. Sources told Yonhap, a South Korean news service, the couple married in December.
Yo-Jong, believed to be 27 years old, is the deputy director of North Korea’s ruling Workers’ Party, where she oversees propaganda. She studied in Switzerland and is a member of the hermit nation’s National Defense Commission.
Her new father-in-law represented North Korea on a trip to Moscow, Russia this past November. “The marriage has allegedly helped Choe...secure his position within Kim’s inner circle after his rapid ascent to the top of the party just last year,” AFP reported.
North Korea made national headlines this winter after a hack on Sony Pictures, allegedly spurred by comedy film The Interview, was said to be ordered by the reclusive country. In The Interview, Kim Jong-Un is murdered by a television producer and host, played by Seth Rogen and James Franco. A group known as “Guardians of Peace” took responsibility for the hack.
