On the opening night of NBC’s Winter Olympics coverage from Sochi, host Bob Costas engaged in a serious discussion about homosexuality in Russia with David Remnick, managing editor of The New Yorker, and Russian-American journalist Vladimir Pozner. The latter posited that “85% of Russians are intensely homophobic.”

Immediately after this conversation, NBC cut to the men’s team figure skating competition, where Russia’s 2006 Olympic gold medalist, Yevgeny Plushenko, was on center ice in a sequined onesie. The Iceberg Skating Palace crowd, predominantly composed of his countrymen, roared its approval.

In that spirit we are launching a daily Olympic fixture for the Sochi Games, “No, That’s Not Gay.”

Our first installment: the Russian Police Choir performing Daft Punk’s 2013 Grammy-winning, disco-flavored hit “Get Lucky.”
