Pink Floyd Reveals More Details About First Album in 20 Years

Pink Floyd, or what has remained of it since the 1985 departure of bassist-turned-frontman Roger Waters and the 2008 death of keyboardist Rick Wright, has revealed new details about its forthcoming first album since 1994’s The Division Bell.

Titled The Endless River, the album will be released November 10 and is primarily a “four-sided instrumental album.” One song, however, has lyrics composed by the writer Polly Samson, who is married to guitarist/vocalist David Gilmour.

“The Endless River has as its starting point the music that came from the 1993 Division Bell sessions,” Gilmour says in a press release. “We listened to over 20 hours of the three of us playing together and selected the music we wanted to work on for the new album. Over the last year we’ve added new parts, re-recorded others and generally harnessed studio technology to make a 21st century Pink Floyd album.”

Drummer Nick Mason, meanwhile, describes the album as “a tribute” to the late Wright. “I think this record is a good way of recognizing a lot of what he does and how his playing was at the heart of the Pink Floyd sound,” he says in the same release.

The artwork for the album cover was conceived by teenaged Egyptian artist Ahmed Emad Eldin, who was not born the last time Pink Floyd released an album, and then re-created by design agency Stylorouge. The cover image appeared Monday on the exteriors of buildings in 10 cities around the world:

Pink Floyd has remained largely inactive since touring behind The Division Bell. Founding member Roger Waters described that record as “nonsense from beginning to end” and has not expressed interest in participating in this latest iteration of the band.
