A new crowdfunding campaign wants you to strap your iPad mini or soon-to-be-delivered iPhone 6 Plus to your head to experience virtual reality.
A Toronto design firm called Metatecture hopes to raise $20,000 through Kickstarter to manufacture AirVR—headgear that turns your Apple gadget into an affordable virtual-reality viewing device. While oculus rift—a head-mounted virtual reality mechanism that does not require an Apple product—costs hundreds of dollars, this headset will set you back $49, plus shipping.
Using the device is simple. Start by sliding one of the above-mentioned Apple devices into the headset. It is said to be comfortable—made with foam, and secure—comes with adjustable bands. Once you strap in, you’re set. The headset leaves device ports exposed, allowing a user to plug in their headphones to experience sound. If your device is fully charged, you are free to move around—carefully, though.
The headset has two lenses directing each eye to one of two identical 3-D graphics being displayed on the device’s split screen. The visuals, paired with sound gives the user an immersive virtual reality experience.
The open ports also give the user the ability to add game controllers to their experience. But this is not the only way to interact. The area unused by the split screen is occupied by a TouchStrip, allowing users to give commands in movies, apps and games.
The AirVR headset is compatible with the iPad mini and iPad mini Retina, while the AirVR+ (also advertised in the Kickstarter campaign) is compatible with the iPhone 6 Plus. The manufacturer notes that they tried to make a headset compatible with the iPhone 5, but the screen was too small.
If their crowdfunding attempt is fruitful, orders made through Kickstarter will be delivered in December 2014, and the online store will open in January 2015.
