Twitter and the music industry: They’re both struggling to figure out how to make (or maintain) a steady profit, but now they’re teaming up in the process. The popular microblogging service is preparing to roll out a Buy button that will let Android and iOS app users purchase music and other merchandise without leaving the app.
A number of musical artists and other organizations, including Ryan Adams, Soundgarden, and Eminem, Home Depot and GLAAD, are participating in the rollout, Billboard reports.
“This is just a tool that closes the gap between discovery of a product and the actual conversion moment,” Twitter’s head of commerce Nathan Hubbard told the magazine. He added: “As a company, we're trying to reach every person on the planet, and these are tools that are designed to help the artists on our platform do exactly that.”
According to Twitter, once a user hits the Buy button, “you will get additional product details and be prompted to enter your shipping and payment information.” The button debuts today for a handful of U.S.-based users.
As Business Insider notes, attempts to combine e-shopping and social networking haven’t been entirely successful so far.
