Crying Japanese Politician Resigns

Japanese politician Ryutaro Nonomura, who became an internet sensation last week when a video of his hysterical bawling at a press conference went viral on YouTube, has resigned, The Yomiuri Shimbun reported. The Hyogo Prefectural Assembly, of which Nonomura was a member, had been investigating Nonomura for suspicious use of public money.

In 2013, Nonomura bought tickets for 195 single-day “business trips,” including 106 trips to a spa resort town in Hyogo prefecture, according to RocketNews24. Nonomura spent ¥3 million, about $30,000, on the tickets, The Yomiuri Shimbun said.

The video of Nonomura’s meltdown has received more than 5,200,000 hits on YouTube. Japanese teens are posting images of themselves imitating Nonomura online, in what is being called a “Nonomura pose,” Kotaku reported. Below, two Japanese teenagers mock Nonomura.

Nonomura has promised to return ¥8 million he spent on trips since 2011 and up to all ¥18 million he received for all expenses.
