Today in Tabs: The Real Victim

German researchersput some people in fMRI scanners to see if they could figure out what happens in our brains when we write. They found, unsurprisingly, that the most activity occurred in areas of the brain associated with self-loathing and regret. Three writers who are not filled with regret today are Mandy Brown, David Yee, and Jason Santa Maria, whose collaborative writing tool Editorially was tried but not quite adopted by everybody before closing in February. The trio are bringing their code and their A-List (and "A List") credentials to Vox Media, which continues its efforts to hire everyone. If you know someone on a non-Vox CMS team, be a little extra nice to them today, ok?

Should Miles Klee and Gabriel Roth be Facebook friends? The answer may surprise you! But probably won't. No word on whether they did any mutual deep-liking afterward.

Sarah Lacey arbitrarily fired David Sirota and Ted Rall from venture-capital fanzine Pando, apparently due to complaints from investors. Paul Carr responded to say that the story is completely wrong, that Sirota and Rall don't even exist, that all matter is merely energy condensed to a slow vibration—that we are all one consciousness experiencing itself subjectively, there is no such thing as death, life is only a dream, we're the imagination of ourselves, and investors have no influence on editorial decisions at Pando.

Facebook engineer Carlos Bueno went inside the "mirrortocracy" and brilliantly took apart the "unwritten rules" of Silicon Valley, demonstrating that they are, if anything, even more rigid and restrictive than the bad old rules of business they're supposed to have done away with.

Conor Friedersdorf, on the other hand, spent 3,000 words explaining that George Will is the real victim. So I guess passionately defending George Will is one way to spend your few precious days between the near-impossible miracle of birth and the eternal void of death.

Today in Tabs: Everyone in this New York Post tab just sounds awful. Say no if you don't want to meet someone for coffee, come on. Not every conversation is an opportunity for income. But counterpoint: the phrase "pick your brain" is banned by the Geneva Convention so remember that next time you try to use it, you war criminal.

Everything is a hoax, part MCMLVIII

Soccer is incredibly dumb but nevertheless, everybody has off work tomorrow to watch the USA-Germany game. Or "match," or "rubber" or whatever it's called in soccer.

This tab about the resurgence of mailing lists among the old bloggers is good except for its conclusion that email newsletters are missing something by not being a conversation. I would have agreed with that ten years ago, but now I think that not everything is better as a conversation. This is essentially a lecture, and that's ok too. So just shut up and read it.

~Bring your own tabs, somewhere there's party~

Today in Tabs was off yesterday for no reason that I can satisfactorily explain in this timeline. It'll get retconned away later, don't worry. Until the gritty reboot, you can find us at Newsweek and email. I tweet my snippets of rejected Night Vale fanfic @rustyk5.
